Katrina Aftermath

August 30th, 2005

Look for satellite imagery from DigitalGlobe, Space Imaging, and Orb Image to play a major role in damage assessments in the affected areas. It could take several days to get cloud-free images, but the before and after assessments from the images will help with relief efforts.

See OrbImage’s Katrina Gallery for before and after imagery.

DigitalGlobe’s Katrina Gallery has both images and analysis of Katrina.

Space Imaging’s gallery also has some images.

Flooding, loss of power, and unsafe water supplies are but a few of the challenges facing the areas hit hard by Katrina.

As rescue efforts and damage assessments continue, the disaster underscores how fragile much of the infrastructure becomes when subject to multiple assaults of flooding, sustained power outages, and crippled transportation.

The first priority has to be helping the affected people. Reports continue to come in outlining the heroics of ordinary citizens.
